Growly leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath. He had been on the edge of his seat, hardly breathing, as he had heard of C.J.âs travels. There were many thoughts and questions swirling in his mind, but first he had to tell Meegwin about the bird. âTully . . . I saw him! He came to me up at the Honey Well! He danced in the language of the bees and told me that C.J. was in danger! Thatâs why I came, but I lost him in a storm. Meegwin, where is C.J.?â
Meegwin sat forward, looking at Growly seriously. âI know where he went, but it was years ago. Growly, what youâre telling me is very worrying. C.J. would have never sent Tully back to the Upper Lands. Itâs far too dangerous a trip. If Tully came to you, he chose to on his own, and he would have only done it if C.J. was really in great danger.â
âCan we find him?â asked Growly in a trembling voice.
âI donât know, Growly,â said Meegwin, in a quiet, serious tone that gave Growly a worried shiver down his back. âIt was years ago that he left, and the place he went is very far from here. Monkeys have been watching for him in their travels but there has been no sign of him. If he is in great danger, I wonder how we will ever reach him in time, or if he is even still there.â
âWhere did he go?â begged Growly. âI have to find him!â
Meegwin realized then that Growly was on the edge of tears, and he reached forward and gently squeezed his paw. âJedrek is gathering the council right now, and soon we will go and plan a rescue with them. We will do everything in our power to find him. But first, let me tell you of what happened after C.J. came to us, and what caused him to leave.â
